Music Recital

Students, faculty members and the dean of the school of engineering enjoyed a musical recital by Mr. Mohtadi Hajj (SoE graduate student). Mr. Hajj is known as “virtuoso pianist” and has performed in many reputable institutions and events. The recital was organized by the Arab Cultural Club as part of the events of the Beirut International Arab Book Fair.

World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF2014)

The dean of school of engineering, Dr. Amin Haj-Ali, attended the World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF2014) held in Dubai, U.A.E. The forum main objective is to bring academicians, engineering practitioners, and engineering decision makers to share the issues, current trends and future outlook for engineering education. The forum included many keynote speeches, workshops and special session for Middle East and North Africa Assembly. 

National Instruments (NI) Seminar

Biographies of the speakers:

Ralph Saab received his master in Electrical Engineering from the Lebanese University in 2001, then a master of applied engineering from RWTH institute in Aachen - Germany in 2002.
He founded RMS company in 2001 for Industrial and automation IT consultancy and implementation. In 2004, He joined Grome Dubai as a Technical consultant and trainer for a two years contract. In 2006, He joined National Instruments as a Field Applications Engineer providing technical support, training and consultation to NI’s clients in MENA region. In 2008 he has been promoted to a Field Sales
Engineer, where he developed and explored new region at Arabia, the Maghreb area, then promoted again into a Senior FSE in 2010 and into a District Sales Manager for the MENA region in 2011 till

Farris Alhorr is an RF specialist and Senior Business Development Manager at National Instruments for the Middle East and North Africa region.
Farris has more than 10 years of industry experience focusing on RF test and measurement instruments, wireless system design, and over the air (OTA) wireless testing. He worked as an RF systems consultant for 5 years and was heavily involved in the CTIA MIMO OTA subgroup. His major CTIA contributions include a patented
method on how to make OTA measurements for wireless devices in a reverberation chamber. Besides his technical expertise, Farris worked as a product line manager for the NI
Software Defined Radio (SDR) platforms with a focus on government, industrial, and academic research applications. He successfully launched two new NI USRP SDRs,
and has given multiple seminars on SDR and LabVIEW in multiple IEEE conferences. Farris holds a Master of Business Administration from The University of Texas at Austin and Master of Electrical Engineering from Texas Tech University.

Industrial Engineering Field Visit

On Tuesday, October 22nd, 2013, an enthusiastic class of second year newly launched Industrial Engineering program conducted a field visit to Sukleen recycling plant and facilities in Choueifat.  A guided tour by Operations Manager Mr. Maher Almasri was conducted explaining to the students the operations and the processes of the facility and exposing them to real-life environments so that they may have a better understanding of the concepts presented to them in class.  Dr. Bassam Hussein, Acting Chair of the Industrial Engineering Department, and Mr. Awad Merhi, public relations,  accompanied the students and presented Mr. Almasri with an appreciation trophy on behalf of LIU.


WCEE Conference Report

In its continued effort to actively participate in engineering and science conferences, symposiums and workshops, the School of Engineering at LIU had a strong at the 9th WORLD CONGRESS ON ENGINEERING EDUCATION (WCEE 2013) - Impact of Globalization on Engineering Education  which was held in Beirut on October 24th–24th, 2013.  The following papers were presented by SoE faculty:


  1. Automated Course Assessment Tools Used at The Lebanese International University.  Adnan Harb, Amin Haj-Ali, Samih Abdul-Nabi, Bassam Hussein
  2. Engineering Learning Outcomes Assessment. Khaled Chahine, Mohammad Hammoud, Hassan Bazzi, and Anwar Kawtharani.
  3. A Three-Pillar Engineering Education System: Student-faculty Member- Academic Institution. Marc-Anthony Mannah, Michel Nahas and Milad Ghantous.
  4. Research by Undergraduate Engineering Students. Ali H. Assi, Hassan A.N. Hejase,
  5. Integration of Mobile Application Development in Computer Engineering Curricula. Milad Ghantous, Michel Nahas, Marc Mannah and Reine El Khoury.
  6. Micro and Nano-Technologies: From Research to Education. Rayan Fayad, Amin Haj-Ali, Mohamad Hajj-Hassan

The share of LIU was 20% of the overall accepted papers and 30% of the presented ones. Many of the national and international participants praised LIU  efforts and the quality of research that was presented.


The Dean of the SoE, Dr. Amin Haj-Ali, received an appreciation award from the Order of Engineers and Architects of Lebanon (OEA) at the closing ceremony in recognition of his active participation in the organization and preparation of WCCE 2013.  LIU was a major sponsor of the event.
